Clarksville, TN—Most festivals feature music, food, and possibly things for children to do. However, in a time when the unemployment rate is at 10% in Clarksville, TN.; UrbanFest is positioned to entertain and help the unemployed.

On October 8, from noon to 11 pm; McGregor Park will be filled with the sounds of salsa bands, uplifting lyrics of gospel, the laughter of children; the beats from the Tina Brown Blues Band and jobs. UrbanFest will feature dance teams, food, vendors, live musical performances and a job fair. “We want people to enjoy themselves and find out more about companies in the local area that may be hiring;” says UrbanFest Job Fair Coordinator; Debra Matthews. UrbanFest will also debut the newest semi-pro basketball team; Nashville Soul.

We will be holding a grand opening celebration for our new offices (410 Church Street) from 10:00am till 2:00pm on Friday September 10th 2010. The opening will also serve as our kickoff for the Hispanic Heritage Month. Our offices are now located next door to Forest Street United Methodist Church, there is ample parking available in the church parking lot located across the street.

On June 5th Nashville Artist Jorge A. Yances came to Clarksville to work with the children at the Hispanic Organization for Progress & Education (H.O.P.E.) to create a mural for their first annual Create, Paint, and Express Yourself youth summer program. The mural was put on display at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library yesterday, and will remain there until the end of the month.

The purpose of this program is to give children another outlet to express themselves instead of getting into trouble through boredom. The art portion of program was funded in part by a grant from the Clarksville Arts & Heritage Development Council, along with sponsorships by AmeriChoice & Jerry's Artarama.   Read more...

On Thursday, the Hispanic Organization for Progress & Education issued the Juan Vasquez scholarship to 4 High School Students from the Clarksville-Montgomery County Area: Yarliz Rodriguez, Francis Nicole Griffin, Rebecca S. Keyes, and Yazarette Guzman. Hope looked at the students civic involvement and their grades in determining who to award the scholarship to.   Read more...

The Hispanic Organization for Progress and Education fulfilled the second part of their mission today at Austin Peay State University’s Hispanic Cultural Center when H.O.P.E. Director Pastor Tommy Vallejos & President Elizabeth Valdez-Adamski awarded a $500 Juan Vasquez scholarship to Sophomore Myra DeCaba. Myra is studying International Business with a goal of entering the banking industry. She is a member of the Hispanic Cultural Center, The Latina Student Association. and several other honor societies.   Read more...
